People ask me which Power BI or Fabric certification to start with. Here's the honest answer, based on actually taking all three.
Start with PL-300
PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) is the right entry point if your daily work is reports and dashboards. It covers data preparation, modeling, DAX, and visualization — the core analyst skillset — without assuming you've touched Fabric's engineering side. If you already build Power BI reports for a living, this exam will feel like a structured review of habits you already have, with a few gaps filled in around row-level security and advanced DAX.
Then DP-600, not DP-700
DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer) is the natural next step because it extends the analyst skillset into Fabric: lakehouses, warehouses, semantic models at scale, and Direct Lake. A lot of PL-300 knowledge transfers directly. DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer), by contrast, leans into pipelines, notebooks, Spark, and orchestration — a genuinely different skill area, closer to data engineering than analytics.
Where each one gets hard
PL-300's hard part is usually DAX edge cases and security configuration, not the tooling itself. DP-600 gets hard around Direct Lake guardrails and capacity-aware design decisions — the kind of thing you only really learn by hitting the limits in a real workspace. DP-700 gets hard if you haven't written much Spark or PySpark before; the exam assumes comfort with notebooks that PL-300 and DP-600 don't.
The honest order
PL-300 first if you're report-focused. DP-600 second to round out the analytics-engineer skillset. DP-700 last, and only once notebooks and pipelines stop feeling unfamiliar — there's little point memorizing Spark syntax you won't otherwise use.
